Most of the 2015-2016 visual artists and showcase guests at Mississippi School of the Arts remember the red cloak on display in Enoch’s Art Gallery for the senior portfolio showcase, as well as the Vernon Room display at the Lincoln-Lawrence-Franklin Regional Library in the fall of 2015. Well, those were not the only places the cloak has made an appearance.

Darian McGehee’s senior high school portfolio work has been featured on the cover of a popular companion novel, “Once Upon A Time: Red’s Untold Tale“, written by Wendy Toliver and based on the ABC television series. The companion novel is currently available on Amazon and bookstores everywhere.

“I sent the costume designer of the show pictures of my cloak to tell them how their show inspired the design and concept of it, and they asked if they could borrow it!”, said McGehee, a class of 2016 Mississippi School of the Arts visual arts alumna from Batesville, MS.

According to Darian, she was browsing through one of her favorite bookstores and noticed a book display with her cloak on the front cover:

Instagram: “Oh you know, just casually walking through my favorite book store to find my cloak on the cover of a book based on one of my favorite tv shows. No big deal.”

The ebook version of the novel was released one month prior to Darian submitting her portfolio to the costume designer. The novel cover was then changed before the printing of hardcopy books, which is what you see in bookstores today. Darian is planning to attend the University of Southern Mississippi in the fall of 2016, on full scholarship, to major in Fine Arts: Painting and Drawing, with a minor in Art History.
